Dremel Flap Wheels: What They Can and Cannot Do
Searching for a Dremel flap wheel usually means one of two projects: detail work on something small, or shape-sanding something that is honestly too big for a rotary tool. Here is the straight answer for both.
What a rotary-tool flap wheel is for
Dremel-size flap wheels are typically 3/8" to 1" in diameter. They are great for jewelry boxes, carvings, model work, cleaning up small metal parts and getting into spots nothing else reaches. At that scale, buy the rotary-tool accessory; we will not pretend our wheels fit a Dremel collet.
When you actually want a drill flap wheel
If the part is furniture-sized (a chair leg, a drawer front, a piece of trim), a rotary tool will get you there a square inch at a time. A 2" flap wheel chucked in a drill covers real area while still following curves, and a 4" wheel covers more. Same flexible-flap principle, twenty times the abrasive surface.
Quick sizing rule
| Workpiece | Tool |
|---|---|
| Smaller than your palm | Rotary tool wheel |
| Palm to table size | 2" or 4" drill flap wheel |
| Bigger, or lots of parts | 8" to 12" wheel on a motor, or a machine at quickwood.com |
